Civic Leadership

Civic Leadership and Community Planning

The Ulster Business School at the University of Ulster is the leading provider, for over 30 years, of university accredited management education and training programmes in Northern Ireland. The Northern Ireland Foundation is a partner of its Advanced Diploma in Civic Leadership and Community Planning course.

The first of its type in Northern Ireland, this programme has been developed to meet the need for a practical, accredited programme for key players involved in developing and implementing community planning.

The course is aimed at elected members and officers in district council municipalities; officers in statutory agencies; and representatives from the voluntary and community sector.

The programme will provide participants with knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of community planning and effective leadership to enable them to make a strategic contribution to attaining organisational objectives and improved performance.

Programme Design

Through practical workshops and dissemination of good practice, participants will gain the knowledge, skills and competence required to undertake a civic leadership role.

The programme is delivered over 18 months, with participants attending six action learning sets alongside completing six modules:

  1. Civic Leadership: People and Place
  2. Personal Leadership Competence
  3. Effective Personal and Communication Skills
  4. Consensus Building and Partnerships
